  1. "Really?"
  2. "Are they still around?" (or a variation that I got once: "Are they still alive?")
  3. "Who?"
  4. "They were big back in the 'eighties, right?"
  5. ***** [insert awkward silence here]
  6. "They're gay, aren't they?"
  7. "Oh, my sister used to like them."
  8. "That's a little unusual, isn't it?"
  9. "Yeah, wait—don't tell me—'West End Girls,' right?"

And by far my favorite, which has happened on several occasions—

  1. "Oh, I love the Pet Shop Boys!"
