Singers who have duetted with Neil on performances of "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"
Neil has performed duets, both in the studio and live on stage, with many singers on many different songs. But surely his all-time most famous duet is with Dusty Springfield on the huge hit "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" As it turns out, he has sung this song with a number of other guest vocalists as well. Here, in chronological order, is a list of singers who have duetted with Neil on various performances of this song:
- Allee Willis
In December 1984, Allee Willis worked with Neil and Chris on co-writing and demoing the song. A brief excerpt of their demo, on which both Neil and Allee sing, can be heard on her official website. She is therefore the very first person with whom Neil duetted on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"
- Dusty Springfield
Of course. But not only did Neil sing with Dusty on the 1987 hit recording of the song, but he also sang it (or at least mimed singing it) live with her at the 1988 BRIT Awards show. And in the years since her death, Neil has on various occasions performed live duets with recordings of Dusty's voice.
- Sylvia Mason-James, Pamela Sheyne, and Derek Green
If you can consider singing with three other people a "duet"—and it does make sense considering that they collectively handled Dusty's part—then Neil "duetted" on the song with these three support vocalists on the Boys' legendary 1991 Performance Tour.
- Melissa Etheridge
On April 19, 2000, the Pet Shop Boys appeared at an Equality Rocks benefit concert in Washington, D.C., during which Neil sang WHIDTDT with another of the concert's guest acts, American rock singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge.
- Cerys Matthews
At the Boys' June 24, 2000 performance at the Glastonbury Festival, Welsh singer-songwriter Cerys Matthews, at the time still a member of the band Catatonia, sang the song with Neil.
- Lady Gaga
At the 2009 BRIT Awards, during which the Pet Shop Boys received an "Outstanding Contribution to Music" award, they were joined by Brandon Flowers and Lady Gaga to perform a 9½-minute medley of their hits. An excerpt of WHIDTDT featured Lady Gaga duetting with Neil.
- f(x)
On December 2, 2015, PSB received the "Worldwide Inspiration Award" at the MNET Asia Music Awards ceremony in Hong Kong. During the Boys' performance of the song at the show, members of the popular Korean "girl group" f(x) took turns singing Dusty's parts.
- Beverley
Knight
British singer-songwriter (and actress) Beverley Knight sang the song with Neil during the Boys' BBC Radio 2 Live concert in London's Hyde Park on September 15, 2019.
- Clare Uchima
One of the members of their backup band, singer-keyboardist Clare Uchima, duetted with Neil on WHIDTDT during renditions of the song on their 2022-23 Dreamworld Tour.
