*I've always considered "greatest hits" and "best of" collections to be cop-outs in "best album" lists. So I've disqualified Discography, PopArt, and any other anthology, including the b-sides collections Alternative and Format—neither of which would have appeared at the bottom of this list had they "qualified." I'm also not counting their special "outside project" albums Closer to Heaven (the vocals are by others anyway), Battleship Potemkin, and The Most Incredible Thing. And it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway, just in case) that their live albums aren't studio albums.

**Very isn't merely my favorite Pet Shop Boys album; it's one of my five favorite pop/rock albums of all time. As far as I'm concerned, it ranks right up there with such widely acknowledged greats as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, and The Dark Side of the Moon. But I'm the only writer I'm aware of who has made such an assertion on its behalf.
